Influential Marylanders Award:
Alexander Blass

As the son of a Holocaust survivor, philanthropy became ingrained in Alexander
Blass at a very early age. “I am very passionate about trying to follow in the footsteps of those who have inspired me, and pay it forward by using my background in technology and finance to make a difference,” says Blass, the CEO and founder of RealityCharity.com.

After earning an MBA from Oxford University in 2003, Blass founded the online
fundraising platform — termed the eBay of giving — in 2005. “I spent over two years developing it because I believe strongly in the ideals of social entrepreneurship and helping others,” Blass says. RealityCharity.com applies the power of six degrees of separation and social networking to the important causes of philanthropy and fundraising, creating a “viral giving” effect that allows each user to reach countless more people more quickly, raising more money and awareness from a global audience. “The late social psychologist Dr. Stanley Milgram’s six degrees of separation theory — that we are all connected in some way — is a fundamental component of why RealityCharity.com works,” Blass says.
